Then you book a sitter for Friday night and wonder if you can claim anything back.

The childcare subsidy Ireland is a State payment made through the National Childcare Scheme (NCS). It cuts the hourly price a registered provider charges you. It goes to the provider, not to families who hire a babysitter.

This guide covers the childcare subsidy in Ireland: the current rates, what changed on 31 August 2026, and where a sitter fits. We checked every rate against Citizens Information and gov.ie on 13 October 2026. Need evening cover? Browse babysitters in Ireland.

Key Takeaways
– The Government pays the childcare subsidy to your provider, who deducts it from your bill.
– The universal subsidy takes €2.14 off each hour, capped at 45 hours weekly.
– Income-assessed rates reach €5.10 an hour for families on €34,000 or less.
– A casual babysitter is not a registered provider, so no subsidy applies.

The childcare subsidy Ireland pays providers, not babysitters

Citizens Information says the State pays the subsidy straight to your provider. The provider then takes it off your bill. NCS subsidy babysitter Ireland questions end the same way: a provider gets it.

A qualifying provider must be on Tusla’s register and hold an NCS contract. Your child must also be over 6 months and under 15.

You never receive the money yourself. You cannot claim it back later against a receipt. Our guide to the National Childcare Scheme and babysitters explains the provider test. Childcare subsidy Ireland goes to the provider, who deducts it from your bill.

What the childcare subsidy Ireland universal rate pays

The universal rate ignores income, says Citizens Information. It pays €2.14 per hour for up to 45 hours a week, whatever your income. No childcare funding babysitter Ireland scheme exists for casual sitters.

How the hours add up

Its examples show how it adds up:

45 hours a week gives €96.30 a week (€2.14 x 45).

20 hours a week gives €42.80 a week (€2.14 x 20).

The fee cap and the income-assessed option

Providers in the scheme face a fee cap. That is the weekly price before any subsidy. For 40 to 49 hours a week in 2026-2027 the cap is €280. After €96.30 of subsidy, a family pays €183.70.

Families under €68,000 can apply for the income-assessed rate instead. You cannot hold both at once. In Limerick, try babysitters in Limerick.

What changed on 31 August 2026

Only the income-assessed subsidy changed on 31 August 2026. The universal rate stayed at €2.14. The Department’s announcement lists these changes:

Change

Before

Now

Lower income threshold

€26,000

€34,000

Upper income threshold

€60,000

€68,000

Multiple child discount, two children

€4,300

€5,500

Multiple child discount, three or more

€8,600

€11,000

Here are the Department’s two examples, for a child aged 24 to 52 weeks. A family with reckonable income of €34,000 now gets €5.10 an hour, up from €4.40. A family on €60,000 gets €2.84, up from €2.14.

Preschool hours under ECCE are separate. They do not use up your NCS hours. In Dublin, try babysitters in Dublin.

Current awards were updated for you. On the universal rate? The NCS subsidy calculator shows if a higher rate is open to you. Applying for the income-assessed rate ends the universal one, so give your provider the new CHICK code straight away.

What is announced for September 2027

The Department’s Budget 2027 release announces more changes. According to the Budget 2027 release, from September 2027:

The universal subsidy increases to €2.50 an hour, from €2.14, for children up to senior infants.

The lower income threshold rises from €34,000 to €38,500.

The weekly fee cap for 40 to 50 hours falls from €280 to €250 in Core Funding services.

These are announced, not yet in force. Today’s rates are the ones above. Childcare subsidy Ireland is paid per hour.

Why a babysitter does not qualify

Citizens Information’s scheme page and universal subsidy page do not list a babysitter in your home. Both ask for a Tusla-registered provider with an NCS contract. A casual sitter who comes in on a Friday night is neither.

So you cannot claim childcare subsidy Ireland for a sitter. The scheme pays for the provider’s service, and a sitter’s hourly fee sits outside it. If you are unsure about your own case, the provider test in the guide linked above shows how to check.

When a subsidy-eligible option is worth comparing

For regular weekday care, compare a sitter with a registered provider who takes the subsidy. A Tusla-registered childminder with an NCS contract is one such provider.

Our guide to childminders and the NCS shows what parents can claim.

Many families use both. The subsidy helps with the daily provider, while a sitter covers the odd evening. Only the provider’s bill can use the NCS childcare subsidy Ireland.

Find a babysitter

For nights out and the odd afternoon, a babysitter can fill the gaps. To start, see babysitters in Meath.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Does the childcare subsidy Ireland apply to babysitters?

A: No. Per Citizens Information, only providers with Tusla registration and an NCS contract receive the subsidy. A casual babysitter is neither, so you pay the sitter in full.

Q: How do I apply for the childcare subsidy in Ireland?

A: Citizens Information says you apply online on the NCS website with a verified MyGovID account and your child’s date of birth and PPS number. Postal applications take longer and may delay your start date.

Q: What is the maximum childcare subsidy Ireland?

A: Citizens Information gives up to €5.10 an hour per child for the income-assessed subsidy. The universal subsidy takes €2.14 off each hour, capped at 45 hours weekly. The Budget 2027 release announces a rise to €2.50 an hour for children up to senior infants, starting September 2027.

Q: Who is eligible for the income-assessed subsidy?

A: Citizens Information says families with reckonable income under €68,000 can apply, with a child over 6 months and under 15 in a registered NCS provider. The rate depends on income, the child’s age and the number of children. Families on €34,000 or under get the maximum.

{"@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "FAQPage", "mainEntity": [{"@type": "Question", "name": "Does the childcare subsidy Ireland apply to babysitters?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "No. Per Citizens Information, only providers with Tusla registration and an NCS contract receive the subsidy.
