Typing “childminder near me” into Google mostly hands you a wall of directory listings, not an actual answer to the question you were really asking: is any of these people any good, and how would you even tell?

The good news is that a childminder near me search gets a lot more useful once you know what separates a genuinely good result from a name that just showed up first.

Key takeaways

– A childminder near me search returns directories, not vetting, so the real work starts after you find a name.

– Tusla registration opened in September 2024 and becomes mandatory in September 2027.

– Garda vetting must be sponsored by a registered organisation; a childminder cannot request it alone.

– Rates typically run €14.15-€18 an hour for a standard childminder, more for an experienced one.

Why “childminder near me” results rarely tell you what you actually need

A location-based search prioritises proximity, not trustworthiness. The results you get back for childminder near me are usually directory or marketplace listings, ranked by how complete a profile is or how recently it was updated, not by anything that tells you whether the person behind it is reliable.

That is not a flaw specific to any one platform. It is simply what a “near me” search is built to do: return options close to you, and leave the vetting to you. A childminder search on TrustedCarers.ie works the same way; knowing that upfront changes how you should actually use any of these results.

What to do once a childminder near me search gives you a name

Whatever list a childminder near me search surfaced, the same handful of checks separate a good outcome from a bad one.

  1. Confirm Tusla registration status directly. Since the Child Care (Amendment) Act 2024, childminders fall under a formal registration framework, though it stays voluntary for most until September 2027. Our full walkthrough of the registration process explains what registration actually involves, and our guide on who has to register covers the exemption for grandparents, aunts and uncles.

  2. Ask to see the Garda vetting confirmation. An individual cannot request their own vetting; it only happens through a registered organisation sponsoring the check.

  3. Call two references, not just one. A profile rating tells you other parents clicked something. A phone call tells you whether the childminder showed up on time and handled a bad day well.

  4. Visit the home before you commit to anything. Look at how the space is set up for children: secured play areas, stair gates, working smoke alarms, and child-proofing that matches your child’s age.

  5. Confirm First Aid and Children First training certificates, both required as part of registration.

What a childminder near me actually costs

There is no official rate card for childminding, so a childminder near me search will not tell you a fixed price upfront. Our full breakdown of childminder fees in Ireland puts the national range at €14.15-€18 an hour for a standard childminder, rising to €15-20+ an hour for an experienced one. That floor tracks the national minimum wage, currently €14.15 an hour for workers aged 20 and over.

Full-time care is usually quoted as a weekly rate rather than hourly, so ask for both figures once you have a specific name to compare, and confirm what is included: meals, activities, and whether school pickup counts as extra.

Childminder, nanny, creche or babysitter: how they differ

A “childminder near me” search sometimes turns up all four of these interchangeably, so it is worth knowing which one you actually need.

    Option

Where care happens

Best suited to

    Childminder

Minder’s own home

Ongoing care, mixed-age siblings, flexible hours

    Nanny

Your home

One-to-one attention, irregular schedules

    Creche

Registered centre

Structured routine, socialising with peers

    Babysitter

Either

Occasional evenings, not full-time cover

If flexible, home-based care is genuinely what you need, a childminder search on TrustedCarers.ie applies the same location-based logic as a generic search, with the checks above still worth running on whoever comes back.

Ready to look properly? A childminder near me search is only the first step. What you do with the results is what actually determines whether the arrangement works out.

    Frequently asked questions

Q: Is a childminder near me automatically Tusla registered?

A: No. Appearing in local search results says nothing about registration status; that has to be confirmed directly with the childminder.

Q: How much does a childminder near me typically cost?

A: Rates generally run €14.15-€18 an hour for a standard childminder, rising toward €20 an hour or more for an experienced one.

Q: What should I check before hiring someone from a childminder near me search?

A: Current Garda vetting status, at least two references you call yourself, and a visit to the home where care will happen.

Q: Can a grandparent count as a childminder near me without registering?

A: Yes. Close relatives, including grandparents, aunts and uncles, are exempt from Tusla registration when minding a related child.
