Working out the real cost of childminder vs creche Dublin care usually starts with a number that feels too high, and then a second number that’s somehow higher again. You’ve probably already heard that childcare here costs more than the rest of the country. What’s harder to find is how much more, on each side of that comparison, and whether the gap is the same for both options or wider on one side.

– Which one costs less in a childminder vs creche Dublin comparison depends more on your child count and hours than on the headline rate.

Childminder vs creche Dublin: the headline numbers

You already know Dublin isn’t cheap for childcare. What you might not know is that the two main options don’t get more expensive by the same amount.

According to Pobal’s Annual Early Years Sector Profile for 2023/24, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown recorded the highest full-day creche fees anywhere in the country, averaging €258.57 a week, well above the €190 national median for full-day care. Childminder rates rise in Dublin too, but by a smaller margin. Our Dublin childminder rates guide breaks down exactly what registered, experienced childminders charge across the city.

That gap matters once you’re actually running a childminder vs creche Dublin comparison side by side, not just looking at either option in isolation.

Childminder rates in Dublin

A registered, experienced childminder in Dublin typically charges €17–€20+ an hour, compared with €14.15–€18 an hour nationally, according to our full breakdown of childminder fees in Ireland. That’s a real premium, but it’s a smaller jump than the one you’ll see on the creche side.

The exact rate still depends on the childminder’s experience, whether they’re Tusla-registered, and how many children they’re minding at once. A childminder caring for your child alongside two or three others will usually charge less per child than one giving your child their full attention.

What’s included in that hourly rate varies too. Some childminders build meals, activities, and the school run into their standard fee; others charge those as extras. Ask directly what’s covered before comparing one quote against another, since two rates that look identical on paper can mean quite different things in practice.

Creche fees in Dublin, and why Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown tops the table

Creche fees in Dublin aren’t uniform across the county, but the overall picture is consistent: Dublin prices sit well above the national average, and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown tops even that.

Area

Full-day weekly fee

Notes

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown

€258.57

Highest in the country (Pobal, 2023/24)

National median

€190.00

Unchanged from the previous sector-profile year

That €258.57 figure is a full-time, five-day rate before any subsidy is applied. If your child attends part-time, the weekly cost drops, but the per-hour rate rarely does. Most creches price part-time sessions higher per hour than a full-day place. You can read the Oireachtas record of the 2023/24 sector-profile figures for the full national breakdown by area.

Fee lists don’t always tell the whole story either. Many creches also ask for a registration or holding deposit before a place is confirmed, and demand in Dublin is intense enough that waiting lists commonly run for months rather than weeks. Factor both into your timeline, not just your budget.

What the National Childcare Scheme actually offsets

The National Childcare Scheme (NCS) pays a minimum universal subsidy of €2.14 an hour, for up to 45 hours a week, and it applies to both sides of this comparison: a registered creche and a registered childminder, not just one.

That’s worth stating plainly, because it’s easy to assume the subsidy only applies to formal, centre-based care. It doesn’t — a Tusla-registered childminder is just as eligible as a creche is, which narrows the real gap once you apply it.

You can check your own eligibility and rate on the National Childcare Scheme’s official site. For the wider picture on how NCS fits into your overall childcare budget, see our guide to childcare in Ireland.
