You have decided a childminder is the right fit for your family, and now you are staring at a blank search with no obvious starting point. How to find a childminder is one of those questions that sounds simple until you actually try to do it, and most generic advice skips the practical part entirely.

The good news is that there is a clear, sensible order to work through, from where to look to how to actually decide.

Key Takeaways

– The three realistic channels are word of mouth, your local Childcare Committee, and a vetted online marketplace.

– Check registration, Garda vetting and references before you shortlist anyone.

– Compare a childminder against a nanny or creche if you are still deciding between options.

– Always run a trial before committing to a full-time arrangement.

How to find a childminder: where to start

How to find a childminder usually starts with one of three channels: personal recommendations from other parents, your local county Childcare Committee, or a vetted marketplace where profiles and vetting status are visible upfront. You can find a Garda-vetted childminder on TrustedCarers.ie and skip the cold-search stage entirely, comparing real profiles from the start.

What to check before you shortlist

Before you get attached to anyone, run through the basics. Whether they are Tusla-registered, and since when, tells you about their NCS eligibility and vetting route; our explainer on whether childminders have to be registered covers exactly what that status does and does not mean.

- Ask about Tusla registration status and, if exempt, how many children they mind

- Ask about Garda vetting and who sponsored it

- Ask for at least two references from past families, and actually call them

- Confirm insurance and basic first-aid training

How to compare childminders, nannies and other options

If you are not entirely set on a childminder yet, it is worth comparing against the alternatives. A nanny works in your home and costs more; a creche offers structured group care in a larger regulated setting. Our wider look at childcare options in Dublin lays these out side by side if you are still deciding.

Questions to ask and running a trial

Once you have a shortlist, the interview stage is where you actually learn who suits your child. Ask about a typical day, meals, naps, and how they handle a sick day or an emergency. A trial morning or short trial period, before committing to a full-time arrangement, tells you far more than any single conversation.

What a childminder costs and what NCS can cover

There is no official rate card for childminding in Ireland, so prices vary by area, hours and how many children are involved. Our detailed breakdown of childminder rates in Ireland covers real ranges, and whether the National Childcare Scheme subsidy applies depends on whether your childminder is registered.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Where can I find a registered childminder?

A: Personal recommendations, your local Childcare Committee, and vetted marketplaces are the three realistic starting points, and asking directly about registration status is how you confirm it since there is no fully public searchable Tusla register yet.

Q: How do I choose the right childminder?

A: Check registration, vetting and references first, then compare how well their routine, home setting and approach actually fit your child, ideally through a trial period rather than a single interview.

Q: How much does a childminder cost in Ireland?

A: There is no official rate card, so it varies by area, hours and how many children are involved. Comparing a few local quotes gives a more accurate picture than any single average figure.

Q: Should I use an agency or find one directly?

A: Both are workable. A vetted marketplace gives you visible registration and vetting status upfront, which can save time compared to verifying everything yourself from a cold search.
